A finished job is easy to judge if you know what to look at. The cuts sit at the collar instead of flush against the trunk or out in a stub. The stump is ground below grade, not sawn off at the ground and left to sprout. The chips are raked out of the grass rather than swept into a bed and forgotten, and there is nothing left in the gutter or on the roof.

Removals in tight spots

Most removals around here have something underneath them that cannot be replaced with a check. A pool cage, a lanai, a neighbor's fence, a service drop running to the corner of the house. That tree does not get felled, it gets taken apart from the top down with everything roped and lowered.

The price on a tight removal is mostly time and rigging, not size. A big oak in an open pasture is a cheaper day than a mid sized pine between two houses, and it is worth understanding why before you compare two numbers on paper.

Trimming, and what a bad cut does

A cut made flush to the trunk takes off the collar, which is the only tissue that can seal the wound, so the tree cannot close it and the decay walks straight into the trunk. A stub left out on the limb does the same thing from the other direction. Neither one shows for a couple of years, and by then it is in the wood.

Thinning is about taking the right limbs, not taking a lot of them. Strip a canopy bare and what grows back is a mass of weak upright sprouts with no attachment strength, which is worse in wind than what you started with.
