Oaks over the old streets in Bradenton

Bradenton grew up along the south bank of the Manatee River, and the housing shows it. Bungalows from the boom years sit around Village of the Arts and Point Pleasant, and block ranches from the middle of the last century fill out the west side toward Palma Sola. The oaks that were saplings when those roofs went on are wider now than the lots they stand in. That canopy is half the reason people buy on these streets. It is also the thing lying over your roof every afternoon in August.

Two oaks can look the same from the driveway and age completely differently. A live oak carries that spread for a long time. A laurel oak, planted all over these neighborhoods because it grows fast, tends to go hollow in the middle while the top still looks full. What I look at is the union where two big leaders meet, whether there is a dark seam of bark pinched in between, and whether anything soft or shelf shaped is growing out of the base.

Work on an old oak over a house is mostly about weight and where it ends up. We take the end weight off the limbs that reach over the roof and the drive, pull the dead out of the canopy, and leave the inner growth alone, because stripping a tree bare inside is what makes the next storm snap it. If a tree is too far gone to keep, it comes down in pieces on ropes over the house rather than getting dropped. Storm limbs and soft ground near the river

Bradenton sits low, on sand over hardpan, with the river along the north edge and Ware's Creek cutting up through the middle of town. After a week of afternoon storms the ground on those blocks stops holding anything. Oak roots here run wide and shallow rather than deep, so when a downburst drops onto a canopy that has not been thinned in years, the tree often does not break at all. The root plate lifts, the soil cracks in a ring around the trunk, and the trunk leans into the neighbor's fence.

That is the call that comes in after weather: limbs down on a fence, or a leaner nobody wants to park under. The hanging limb is the one that hurts somebody, because it can sit up in the canopy looking settled and let go on its own a day later while the yard is back in use. Most of what we do on the storm side happens before the storm. A canopy that has been thinned lets wind pass instead of catching it like a sail, and the heavy limb reaching over the roof is the one worth shortening now rather than in the dark with water coming in. Insurance is part of this too, since a carrier can look at a tree lying on a roofline and make it your problem. Valerie Snow wrote, "Also, trimmed & removed Ficus that caused non renewal of insurance." Where an oak has split leaders worth keeping, cabling and bracing can hold it instead of taking the tree out.

Palms, and the stump left behind

Half the yards on the west side of Bradenton run on palms rather than shade trees. A sabal and a queen do not want the same trim, and neither of them wants the one that gets asked for most, the hurricane cut that takes everything off except a topknot. Strip a palm that hard and it spends the next year growing back the fronds it needed to feed itself, with a weaker spear at the top going into storm season. Dead fronds, pods and boots come off. The green growth that still sits level or above stays on the tree.

Stump grinding is the job that shows up most in our reviews, usually because the stump is sitting in the part of the yard somebody actually wants to use. Grinding is not one depth for every job either. A stump that only has to disappear under mulch is a different cut from one with sod going over the top, and different again from a spot where you want another tree, because the chips and the old root wood have to come out far enough for real soil to go back in. Lateral roots running under a walk get taken while we are there.

The hole is the part people forget. Grindings settle over the following months, so a patch that looked level when we left can dish out later if it was filled with nothing but chips. We backfill and lay sod over it when that is what you want, or set a new tree far enough off the walk and the drive that you are not doing this again in a few seasons.
